When Is the Best Time to Paraglide in Cape Town?

Paragliding in Cape Town is weather dependent, so timing your flight well makes all the difference between a quick glide and a long, soaring adventure. Here is a season-by-season guide to help you plan, whether you are coming for a tandem flight or to learn to fly on a licence course.
Summer (November to March)
Summer is the busiest flying season in Cape Town. Long days and stable mornings make it ideal for tandem flights from Signal Hill and Lion's Head. The catch is the famous south-easterly wind, the Cape Doctor, which often builds through the afternoon. For the best chance of flying, book a late-morning slot and keep your dates flexible around the start of your trip.
Autumn (April to May)
Autumn is a quietly excellent time to paraglide. The strong summer winds ease off, the air is clean and crisp, and conditions are often smooth from sunrise into the early afternoon. Fewer visitors means more relaxed sessions, and the light is beautiful for photos and video over Sea Point and Camps Bay.
Winter (June to August)
Winter brings cold fronts and rain, but it also brings some of the most rewarding flying of the year. The best days are usually the day after it has rained, when the sky clears and the wind drops. Flights still run seven days a week whenever it is safe to fly. Winter is also when many pilots choose to start training, because the calmer between-front days are perfect for learning ground handling and first flights.
Spring (September to October)
Spring is a transition season, with a mix of winter's calm windows and the first stronger spring winds. Mornings are often the most reliable. It is a great time for both tandem flights and guided cross-country days for licensed pilots heading out to sites like Porterville and Hermanus.
When should you book?
Because every flight depends on the weather on the day, the single best tip is to book paragliding for the beginning of your stay in Cape Town. That way we can watch the forecast, advise you on the best day to fly, and find an alternative date if your first choice is not flyable. Contact us early and we will fit you in around your schedule.
Thinking of learning to fly?
If a tandem flight leaves you wanting more, you can train towards your own paragliding licence with Sky Safari. Our next licence course intake begins on 15 August 2026, with training across Cape Town and the Garden Route on the days that suit you and the weather is good for learning. Your tandem flight counts towards the course, so it is a natural first step. Get in touch to reserve your place.
